For as long as I can remember I have yearned for the world to be different. Where love and kindness and inclusiveness carry the day. And goodness and justice has invaded every dark corner.
Overcoming chaos and tribulations. And replaces them with peace.
“We Shall Overcome” was originally a hymn, written in 1900 by Reverend Charles Albert Tindley of Philadelphia.[1]
But over the years it has been used as a protest song worldwide, was a key anthem in the Civil Rights Movement, and has been sung at prominent funerals such as Martin Luther King’s.
Its compelling lyrics continue to resonate with dreams of a better world. Affirming that with God’s help, the world will eventually overcome the violence, prejudice, discrimination, fear, dishonesty, distrust and hatred so evident across the current world stage.
It is a spiritual battle song that continues to instil hope in a disheartening world.
Persistent in its cry. Stirring expectancy and hope within weary hearts and despairing souls. Still capable of infusing a profound assurance that the Lord will see us through. And we will overcome.
We Shall Overcome
We shall overcome, we shall overcome
We shall overcome some day
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome some day
The Lord will see us through, the Lord will see us through
The lord will see us through some day
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
The Lord will see us some day
We’re on to victory, we’re on to victory
We’re on to victory some day
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
We’re on to victory some day
We’ll walk hand in hand, we’ll walk hand in hand
We’ll walk hand in hand some day
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
We’ll walk hand in hand some day
We are not afraid, we are not afraid
We are not afraid today
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
We are not afraid today
The truth shall make us free, the truth shall make us free
The truth shall make us free some day
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
The truth shall make us free some day
We shall live in peace, we shall live in peace
We shall live in peace some day
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
We shall live in peace some day

We have hope in Christ to overcome our challenges. “Affirming that with God’s help, the world will eventually overcome the violence, prejudice, discrimination, fear, dishonesty, distrust and hatred so evident across the current world stage.” Only God can supply our every need. But as long as we are on this side of heaven, we’ll face these sins and obstacles in our lives. Thanks for sharing these encouraging thoughts. Our hope always remains alive as long as we’re focused on Him.

Thanks for your comments Erendira. I agree that we will always face challenges in this life, but also that we can rest in the knowledge that eventually these obstacles and struggles will be overcome. This gives us hope, in what can be discouraging times.
