As he prepared to enter the city he was fully cognizant of the trials that lay ahead.
He might have chosen to furtively slip in. Attempt to avoid those who were anticipating his arrival.
But he did not.
Instead, he resolutely forged ahead.
As he had expected his arrival quickly drew the attention of a large crowd.
Some leaders, who were part of the crowd, urged him to rebuke his supporters and stifle their enthusiasm.
Perhaps their caution stemmed from an apprehension around how he would be received by the religious leaders. Anxious about the consequences he would surely face as a result of their anger and jealousy.
Or perhaps they were the antagonists. Those who felt threatened. Afraid of his teachings. Refusing to accept the new kingdom that he was initiating. Fearful of his command to love God and all others. Resisting his call to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8).
So, they sought to silence him.
And yet, he courageously persisted.
And then, “When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out” (Luke 19:37-40).

Jesus defied his adversaries. His death and resurrection revealed the profound truth and good news that they could not silence him nor stop him.
His narrative is eternal. His love is ever-lasting. Steadfast and true.
So acts of worship become inevitable. And pure joy is impossible to contain.
Love is such a mighty force that even if it were possible to temporarily silence believers, then the very stones of the earth would step up to continue the battle cries of love, grace, mercy, and justice.
The scoffers missed an essential truth – that God is the Creator who lovingly shaped his creation. To love him and to love others in return.
This love is impossible to restrain.
It defied the sceptics and cynics. It defeated death.
It is is the only power with the potential to profoundly transform our broken world.
Jesus is our cornerstone. He continues to call out to each one of us to rise and help build his living temple (1 Peter 2:4-10).
To accept his invitation and bravely step into wherever he uniquely calls us to lead and to effect change and to love.
And together, continue to worship and to cry out.
And with an audacious and courageous and triumphant love contribute to his eternal narrative.

Jessica, thanks for your encouragement and for visiting The Stones Call. I am delighted the post inspired you! Blessings.

Hey, Anne. I love this line–Love is such a mighty force that even if it were possible to temporarily silence believers, then the very stones of the earth would step up to continue the battle cries of love, grace, mercy, and justice. What a great picture of the power of God’s love over Creation. It’s profound to me that even if God’s people were silenced, that God’s creation would still praise him. He is a mighty God. Thanks for sharing.
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 19, 2019 9:29 am
Chip, thanks for your encouraging comments. Oftentimes when I take the time to closely observe nature I become awed by its intricacy, resiliency, complexity, power, and beauty. All crying out to us about how God loves to create and how he loves all that he has created. And yes, it praises him in its splendor. And I agree Chip that we can draw on the beauty of that image to help us learn how to worship and praise God. Thanks for visiting The Stones Call. Blessings!

How I needed this today! Even though I know that hardship in the face of God’s calling is expected, I can still fall into discouragement when it hits. Your post reminded me of so many things: the power of praise, the power of words, and the power of Jesus. May we all have the strength and courage to cry out and look beyond ourselves to what God has called us to. Thank you for this strong encouragement!
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 19, 2019 9:24 am
Peggy, I am so delighted that the post resonated with you. While I also know that suffering and hardship is part of life and being a Christian, it can be so discouraging when we are in a winter season. But I too find reassurance in the fact that nothing can stop God’s eternal glory and plan. That if we can rest in his promises and steadfast love we will be empowered by it to remain strong when things are hard. Blessings to you and may you be encouraged in and through Jesus.

I would have loved to be there to worship along with the disciples and to hear, “the stones call out.” Thank you for sharing Anne.
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 19, 2019 9:20 am
I too would have loved to walk alongside Jesus with the disciples and be encouraged by their worship and praise.

Anne this is beautiful. I agree with Jessica, your blogs are poetic. 🙂 I love this quote you make, “Love is such a mighty force that even if it were possible to temporarily silence believers, then the very stones of the earth would step up to continue the battle cries of love, grace, mercy, and justice.”
It reminds me of one man in Turkey who shared the gospel with a person on the street and sadly lost his tongue as the soldier cut it out. The lack of a tongue, as horrible as that is, did not stop this man from continuing to share the love of Jesus. He just found another way.
You are right, the love of God is a mighty force and nothing stops those who have found it from sharing it!
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 19, 2019 3:07 pm
Marcie, I so appreciate your feedback and generous comments. What a testimony this man in Turkey provides. It is a tragic story of persecution, yet he does not let it stop him from praising and worshiping. Once we experience the love of God it is a mighty force and allows us to do things we might never dream possible for his glory and kingdom! Thanks for visiting The Stones Call! Blessings.

Beautiful! And I want to continue to respond to His call with a resounding “Yes!” to build His Kingdom and help others understand about faith in Jesus. Beautiful writing style.
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 19, 2019 3:04 pm
Yes! I do too Anneliese! I want to respond to his call and worship him with joy and abandon, not caring what others think or how they judge me. What a privilege to partner with God and his faithful. Thanks for your encouraging comments.
Stephanie M. GammonJanuary 19, 2019 4:02 pm
I love this thought ‘if we could temporarily silence all believers’ I have never considered this before. Even when I’m not praising him, somewhere someone else who loves Him is. In ever corner of the earth he has chosen who love and worship him. How could we be silenced?
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 20, 2019 6:18 am
Stephanie, I love your point that even if we are not praising Jesus in one moment there is someone, somewhere else that will continue to do so. And even if we were all silenced, then creation itself would continue to cry out in praise. And yes, although persecution has continued throughout the world and attempts to silence the praise of believers, there are just more who rise up and continue to respond to the call to help be the stones that building the living temple, with Jesus as the cornerstone. Blessings.

Yvonne MorganJanuary 19, 2019 8:02 pm
Beautiful as usual Anne. I love your blogs. If I don’t follow Jesus’ call to action, He will find other rocks to call out and I will be the one who missed out
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 20, 2019 6:14 am
Thanks Yvonne. I love the imagery that if we don’t follow his call or we are silenced in any way the rocks will cry out. Even the rocks in the temple. Because even though the leaders of Jesus’ time believed if they could silence Jesus and his believers and keep control the temple they would continue to hold the power. But what they did not understand is that the inheritance Jesus gives us is not tied to the possession or ownership of physical buildings or vineyards, it transcends these things. For He is the owner of all things and we are only the renters! And he is interested in building a living temple where each one of us is one of the rocks that helps build it. He is in control of all things in creation and he is the Cornerstone of it all. Our inheritance does not come from things of this world – but it comes through Jesus and it is the gifts of being in relationship with him and other believers and of an eternal life! So yes! Let’s act, praise, worship and help build the eternal temple! Thanks for your encouragement Yvonne!

I love the encouragement that Jesus still calls out to us to build his kingdom! That is important to remember!
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 20, 2019 4:47 pm
Julie, yes! Jesus call echoes throughout the centuries into eternity – to help build his living temple and praise his name. What a privilege that we can participate in this mighty work! Blessings.

Beautiful post, and a reminder how we are to treat those who scoff at us when we follow Christ.
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 21, 2019 10:43 am
Linda, thanks for commenting. I appreciate how you picked up on how Jesus and his disciples teach us to treat those who scoff at us or persecute us. We continue to love. We keep walking forward. We keep entering into the hard stuff. And just persist! Being fully confident that no matter how things unfold – God’s work through us and the love we spread – ultimately can not be stopped. Blessings.
Elaine StoresJanuary 21, 2019 6:05 am
What a powerful truth it is that all creation sings His glory, and if people fail, the rest of creation will do it for us. Your point that “This love is impossible to restrain”, is so important and full of hope. God’s love is a limitless love. It never runs out, it can’t be stopped or held back. What a wonderful God we serve!
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 21, 2019 10:40 am
Elaine – it is a beautiful image isn’t it! To know that all creation sings out praise of God and worships him. That because of God’s mighty love his kingdom and people transcend all temples and time, and will persist against all opposition!
Amanda HartrichJanuary 21, 2019 7:16 am
Like so many others that commented, the first word that comes to mind is “beautiful.” I love your writing and wisdom. Thank you for reminding me of the overwhelming power of love. God’s love will not be stopped!
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 21, 2019 10:36 am
Amanda, thank you so much for your encouraging comments. Yes! How comforting it is to know that whatever forces mobilize against Jesus and his bride they will never overcome it. Love will prevail! Blessings.

Filled with rich encouragement. “And yet, he courageously persisted.” I’m taking this nugget with me.
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 21, 2019 10:34 am
Andrea, thanks for your comment. I am delighted that you found a particular nugget that you will take away and use. I totally agree – that we can learn so much for Jesus’ focus and persistence, even in the face of massive opposition. I pray that I can have even a part of that courage, focus and resoluteness!

Thanks Nancy for joining me at The Stones Call and engaging in the discussion. Sometimes we tend to look for complex answers for difficulties and challenges and yet, it so often boils down the the transformative power of love!

“The scoffers missed an essential truth – that God is the Creator who lovingly shaped his creation. To love him and to love others in return.” Love this, Anne!
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 21, 2019 5:02 pm
Thanks Aminata for visiting The Stones Call and for commenting. Yes, sometimes even as believers we can get distracted from the knowledge and certainty that God is the Creator who lovingly created and governs the universe and all that is in it. I love the epilogue in Job which reminds us of just how much God loves to create and how he delights in all he creates! He invites us into this beautiful relationship where he begins by loving us with this incredible, steadfast, crazy love and calls us to love him and others in return. It would be impossible for us to love in such a bold and persistent and abundant way – unless we accept his invitation to love and allow his love to spill into us and through us into others.
Emily | To UnearthJanuary 22, 2019 6:28 am
I forget where I read this, but I love how an author put God’s truth: Nothing can silence it. Nothing can stop God’s truth from spreading. Nothing ever has, and nothing (and nobody) ever will. I was reminded of that while reading your words. What an encouragement to know that nothing and no one can silence our God!
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 22, 2019 9:23 am
Emily, thanks for sharing this insight. Yes! Nothing can stop God’s truth and love from spreading. Despite efforts to stop it, even going to the point of killing Christ and persecuting and killing his saints, it continues to spread! What hope that gives us in the midst of the current chaos, strife, challenges that we face within the world today. Thanks for visiting The Stones Call and for commenting. Blessings.
Karen FridayJanuary 22, 2019 6:54 am
Yes, Anne, His love is the kind “impossible to restrain.” Love causing our souls to cry out to to “Hosanna in the highest.” Deep cries because of His eternal narrative, our living hope!
Thanks for this beautiful post. My heart felt worshipful as I read.
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 22, 2019 9:21 am
Karen, yes! “Hosanna in the highest!” We are so blessed to be sharing in his eternal narrative. So delighted the post moved you to worship and praise! Amen!

This was beautiful! I think about the Pharisees who obviously knew there was something special about Jesus, but could not risk their place in society for the beautiful truth of Jesus. How fitting that Jesus would tell them if he tried to silence His disciples the rocks would cry out. No one considers a rock to be a living thing on its own, but when the ROCK is the foundation and cornerstone of life every knee will bow and tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord….even the Pharisees.
Anne Mackie MorelliJanuary 23, 2019 4:05 pm
Sheila, thank you for visiting The Stones Call and for your comments. Yes! I agree, they knew something was unique about Jesus and they were so afraid him and how he was drawing people to him. They were also afraid that he was going to take over the temple and remove them. But Jesus in response to them – simply declared that they would never win the battle, even if they held on to the stone temple or they silenced his disciples. Jesus is triumphant because he is the eternal, living cornerstone of the new living temple he was, and continues to build! And we, as believers are the stones that will continue to cry out and build his kingdom. What a privilege!

“With an audacious and courageous and triumphant love contribute to his eternal narrative”
What an awesome statement this is! May we continually shout our praises and lift our voices up to Him in worship. You’re writing is captivating to the soul!

Ah, to be able to walk with Jesus in those days..
Beautifully written, Anne. Isnt it amazing that we get to be Kingdom-builders alongside our God! Lord, let not the rocks cry out simply because I have failed to. May His praise ever be on our lips!
Anne Mackie MorelliApril 12, 2019 10:08 am
Imagine what it would be like to walk alongside Jesus and to listen to Jesus teach! How amazing it would be to do it in person! Yet, how amazing is it that we are still invited to walk with him and be part of his grand eternal narrative. I too pray that I am strong enough to worship and praise him in all circumstances. Thanks or visiting The Stones Call and for your encouraging comments.

Beautiful post. It’s great to see these things and just remember how much God loves us. Especially as Easter is approaching
Anne Mackie MorelliApril 13, 2019 9:49 am
Thanks for visiting The Stones Call and for commenting. Yet, God loves us and as the Cross and Resurrection are approaching it is a good reminder that our response to that love is to continue to praise and worship, and let nothing silence us.
RobertApril 13, 2019 7:39 am
Thanks for the wonderful and inspiring post, especially at this time when it’s nearly Palm Sunday. I like how you draw out the fact that worship is inevitable and something we can’t help but do, especially when encountering God in a powerful way. As living stones, that should be our response just like the physical stones to which Jesus referred.
Anne Mackie MorelliApril 13, 2019 9:48 am
Robert, yes this Scripture passage is such a great reminder that no matter what happens, no matter what others choose to do to repress Christ – worship of God cannot and will not be silenced. We have seen this since Christ died, where his Word continues to spread, and even in the most repressed areas of the world people are continuing to rise up and worship. And I agree – we are the living stones and it is our responsibility to continue to worship and build the Church. Thanks for your comments.
Janene EldredApril 13, 2019 1:17 pm
Sadly, we have come to a time when the sound of the rocks crying out may be louder than the sound of Christians crying out. Thank you for your wonderful post, and God bless you!
Anne Mackie MorelliApril 13, 2019 3:09 pm
Yes, it can often feel like Creation is crying out more than Christians who are remaining silent and/or who have been silenced. But what gives me hope is that no matter what has been tried over the centuries to silence Jesus and his eternal message – it has not been successful. Because there will always be a remnant who will remain faithful and continue to praise and worship. Thanks for visiting The Stones Call. Blessings to you too!
